Award winners announced
The Hunter’s manufacturing sector has recognised GH Varley
Pty Ltd for its world class work and named it as the 2007 EnergyAustralia
Manufacturer of the Year.
The prestigious award was one of 11 categories winners announced
tonight in the 2007 EnergyAustralia Hunter Manufacturing Awards.
The judges said that in the past 10 years Varley had continued
the pursuit of excellence by improving technology and applying
this to the development of new products and services.
The 120 year old company also won AusIndustry’s Excellence
in Innovation award for creating the MA100 Electric Tug. The innovative
tow vehicle for airport baggage boasts zero gas emissions.
Newcastle’s Pudding Lady won Excellence in Marketing, sponsored
by the Commonwealth Bank, for creating new products for year-round
selling and expanding its clientele to David Jones, Myer, Amway
and Innovations Direct.
Leading health educator and manufacturer of health and exercise
products including the mediBall Pro, AOK Health won Excellence
in Export of Manufactured Goods, sponsored by DSRD, for showing
excellent growth in overall exports and total sales in new markets.
Excellence in Technology, sponsored by Dwyidag Systems International,
was won by Pearlstreet ETRS, a business which specialises in providing
Asset Lifecycle Management Services to the energy and resources
industries. The ASX listed company was acknowledged for using
Phased Array Ultrasonics in an innovative way to detect corrosion
on the faces of pipe flanges.
Australian Defence contracting company, BAE Systems, won Excellence
in Training, sponsored by Downer EDI Rail. The award was won for
the company’s resourcefulness in training sheet metal workers
to quickly become Aircraft Maintenance Engineers under the pressure
of the Hunter skills shortage.
Michael Wall of OneSteel Wire walked away with Manufacturing
Employee of the Year, sponsored by Forsythes Recruitment, for
his outstanding work in project management, engaging employees
and business planning
Excellence in Safety, sponsored by OneSteel, was awarded to the
Newcastle Rod Mill division of OneSteel for implementing improved
safety initiatives in its LEAN Manufacturing program.
Excellence in Manufacturing Process, sponsored by Tomago Aluminium,
was awarded to OneSteel Wire for its efficient and safe manufacture
of star pickets and fence posts.
Marine Barbecues Australia won Excellence in Product Design,
sponsored by the University of Newcastle, for manufacturing high
quality barbecues for use in salt air environments.
TRINature walked away with Excellence in Environmental Practice,
sponsored by Worley Parsons, for its manufacture of biodegradable,
naturally based alternatives for use in household cleaning and
personal care in place of traditionally harmful chemicals.
The Awards dinner also provided a unique experience for students
of TAFE Hunter. The partnership saw about 15 or so students and
their teachers from the disciplines of design, multimedia, industrial
design, screen and film, music and theatre work with HMA to produce
the dinner. Their work included; developing the theme, presentations
for the screens, the filming of the event, performances, the program
design and creation of a gift DVD.
