HNGTC TO DEVELOP BUSINESS IN THE UPPER HUNTER
HunterNet Group Training Company (HNGTC) has
become the first Hunter-based Group Training Company to establish
a physical presence in Muswellbrook, after an agreement was reached
between HunterNet Cooperative and the Hunter Institute of TAFE.
On 16 October 2006, HunterNet and HNGTC entered
into a lease arrangement to rent a small office on the grounds
of the local TAFE Campus in Muswellbrook.
Previously, HunterNet Cooperative and HNGTC held
separate Strategic Planning sessions facilitated by HunterNet
member, Mr Lee Baines of MIM Management Services. One of the major outcomes from the sessions,
for both Companies, was the need to establish a presence in the
Upper Hunter Region, particularly in the Muswellbrook area.
For HNGTC, the critical skill shortages in the Region and
the opportunities for growth acted as an incentive for the Group
Training Company to target.
“The inability of local business in the Upper
Hunter to locate competent trades people is virtually at crisis
point,” said HNGTC Manager, Murray Christie.
He added that “People are moving out of industry for a
number of reasons, and there are not enough people being trained
to ‘step up’ into these roles. HunterNet Group Training Company is eager to
assist businesses in overcoming these challenges, as well as providing
young local people with an opportunity to learn a trade.”
Mr Christie also acknowledged the tremendous
support they receive from its training partner - Hunter Institute. “As well as being the leading training provider
of apprentices and trainees in the engineering field, Hunter Institute
was delighted to assist both HunterNet and HNGTC in our Upper
Hunter venture.”
HNGTC expects to employ more apprentices this
year through the sponsorship of Centennial Coal, and will be continuing
its participation in Muswellbrook TAFE’s
Mining and Engineering Skills program.
John Coyle, Executive Officer for HunterNet commented
“the establishment of a facility in the Upper Hunter will also
provide a platform for the ongoing expansion of the HunterNet
network, and it’s Membership in the region”.
